Plot
Dr. Farraday, commander of Earth’s International Institute of Space Technology, is preparing to make an incredible announcement: alien visitors are arriving from the red planet. Something apparently goes wrong, however, and the supposed aliens don’t show up. Instead, a request for assistance arrives.
Farraday decides to organize a rescue mission to Mars as a humanitarian response to the SOS, but when the Earth astronauts finally arrive and locate a crashed spaceship, its alien crewman is already dead. Meanwhile, a second mission is sent to Phobos (one of Mars’s moons) in order to resolve some technical issues which arose during the first mission. There on the frozen wasteland of the Martian satellite, the astronauts spot the vestiges of a second alien spaceship, this one harboring an extraterrestrial creature (green naturally, and quite visibly female to boot) who is alive, but in a state of suspended animation.
The command decision is made to transport the mysterious alien back to Earth for scientific research, but the unfortunate crew quickly discovers that she’s refusing to eat solid food because she’s a hematophagous creature who plans on draining their blood. One crew member comes up with the “brilliant” idea to feed their guest the ship’s stored plasma reserves, and if worse comes to worst, they could resort to blood donations from the remaining astronauts.
Unfortunately, they have no idea they’re dealing with an alien whose extremely rapid metabolism gives her a practically insatiable hunger for blood.
Cause of death has been determined a loss of blood...
Critique
5Produced by Roger Corman’s American International Pictures in record time (rumor has it that filming was completed in a little less than a week) and overseen by a director with the talent and know-how to carve out a respectable niche for himself in horror cinema, “Queen of Blood” employs a vampire angle to recycle sci-fi ideas dating back to the 1950s, starting with the seminal “The Thing from Another World” (consider its take on alternate ways alien plant life might develop) and continuing up to “It! The Terror from Beyond Space” (featuring a creature slipping onboard a spaceship and launching into a killing spree).
Despite a rock-bottom budget and dialogue that walks a tightrope between banality (“Every space travel is risky“, the erudite Dr. Farraday declares) and absurdity (the alien’s apparent hemophilia leads the crew’s scientist to conclude that she might belong to “some sort of royalty“), the overall result isn’t entirely dreadful. In fact, after a mostly snooze-worthy first half hour, the film perks up, culminating in an intriguingly weird scene showing the lead scientist – looking something like an interplanetary top chef – ecstatically carrying a heaping tray of disgusting, pulsating alien eggs.
Bizarre combination of actors including high-caliber stars such as John Saxon and Dennis Hopper.
