Plot
After a long absence, writer Ben Mears returns to his hometown of Salem’s Lot, Maine, to complete his latest literary endeavor as well as to confront unresolved childhood traumas.
Obsessed by an old, ominous residence with a sinister history, the man unsuccessfully attempts to rent it, discovering that the current owner is a cryptic antique dealer waiting for a mysterious business associate who ends up being none other than a powerful vampire eager to suck every last drop of blood out of the local community. Once he realizes the gravity of the situation, Mears, with the assistance of a teenage boy who is an expert on monsters, decides to take on this demonic presence.

6Liberal adaptation of the Stephen King novel (1975) of the same name, “Salem’s Lot” suffers in part from the constraints of television: staid pacing at times, too many breaks, a rather watered-down horror component.
But all that doesn’t change the fact that, compared to most TV productions, Hooper’s film rises to the level of great cinema, a work replete with dusty ambience and enhanced by a handful of truly evocative scenes (the terrifying floating children, Barlow’s raid in Mark’s house). A Mephistophelian James Mason rises above a basically nondescript cast.
The main vampire’s look, with his prominent incisors – but for unfathomable reasons, his victims’ canines grow -, is deliberately reminiscent of F. W. Murnau’s “Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens” (1922).
Best seen in its 184-minute version.
