Plot
A degenerate mother gets the charming idea to tie her annoying young son to his bed so she can fool around with her boyfriend in peace. The kid doesn’t take it too well, to say the least. When his sister Lacey finally cuts him free with a carving knife, he grabs the knife and heads straight to the libidinous couple’s bedroom and vents his rage by repeatedly plunging it into the man’s back, killing him on the spot. His sister sees the whole thing reflected in the mirror.
Now, twenty years later, Lacey is still plagued by nightmares about that brutal murder and has begun seeing a psychiatrist. But things take a horrific turn when a hysterical Lacey shatters the bedroom mirror that witnessed the man’s killing, and from its shards the dead man’s vengeful spirit rises and begins terrorizing the poor young woman.
Forget the shrink, what she really needs is an exorcist…

Critique
4Take a bit of “Halloween” (1978), add a pinch of “The Exorcist” (1973), and don’t forget to set it all in the colonial house from “The Amityville Horror” (1979), and voilà, you’ve got “The Boogeyman”, a film directed with a battering ram and offering precious little in the realm of originality.
Hopelessly mediocre director (and sometime actor) Ulli Lommel is apparently clueless as to which direction to take his movie, so he tries to cover all bases at once. He starts off emphasizing the story’s psychological aspect (two-bit psychology at that), and then suddenly veers into slasher territory, and finally goes out with a bang by tossing in evil emanations and demonic possessions. No surprise that in the midst of such a mishmash, logic and consistency fly out the window.
Like in virtually all of the German director’s films, the pacing lags and the dialogue is unbelievably painful and pathetic.
Total snoozefest.
