Plot
Five college friends are preparing to spend a much-needed vacation in an old, isolated cabin in rural Tennessee. Unfortunately for them, below the cabin lurks a dark, mysterious cellar where they find a tape recorder with an archeologist’s recordings of incantations from an arcane tome “bound in human flesh and inked in human blood“, called the “Naturan Demanto”, a Sumerian version of the Egyptian “Book of the Dead”.
When they play the tape, they inadvertently reawaken a frightening, dangerous metaphysical entity. Once unleased, this demonic force will relentlessly torment the group, penetrating their bodies and possessing their minds.
Scotty. I... I think there's something out there.
Critique
7With his feature-film debut, Sam Raimi brings us a claustrophobic horror movie that capitalizes on excess. In fact, after a deceptively relaxed opening, the eruption of evil in the cabin bathed in white moonlight constitutes a sort of point of no return: dismemberments, mutilations, rivers of bodily fluids, and horrifying transmutations keep coming non-stop in a suffocating, almost nightmarish atmosphere.
The makeup and special effects retain a crude efficacy even today, despite the meager budget and an extensive use of makeshift solutions. The cast, mostly composed of the director’s friends, includes the square-jawed face of future horror icon Bruce Campbell, who had starred in Raimi’s earlier short film (“Within the Woods” – 1978) which contained the nucleus of a good number of the elements expanded upon in this film.
The plot gets repetitive and is weighed down in places by an excessively serious tone (during an interview, Campbell himself even admitted that the film was overly melodramatic at times). It’s not the consummate masterpiece that some fans’ enthusiastic comments would lead you to believe, but rather a work whose primary importance lies in the influence it exerted on the evolution of the genre, especially in the figurative representation of horror. In that regard, young Raimi’s techniques and insights – enhanced by the fine work of Bart Pierce and Tom Sullivan – have justly been the subject of numerous academic studies.

Quotes
- Why have you disturbed our sleep? Awakened us from our ancient slumber? You will die like the others before you. One by one we will take you!
- I fear that the only way to stop those possessed by the spirits of the book is through the act of bodily dismemberment.
- Scotty. I... I think there's something out there.
Trivia
- In the scene where Ash goes down into the cellar for the first time, it’s possible to see a ripped movie poster for Wes Craven’s “The Hills Have Eyes” (1977).
- The originality that characterizes many of the film’s scenes is partly due to the “shaky cam” (a term Sam Raimi came up with), a movie camera mounted to plywood 2×4’s that slide along a metal rod, allowing rapid movements to be combined with sharp turns.
- In 1984, Utah resident William Fairwood supposedly leveled a cabin on his property because it was too similar to the one seen in “The Evil Dead”. It’s said the man was driven to act out of fear of finding a secret basement there…
