Sorority

Author: Serena Debegnach
Girls, teens, and young women belonging to groups or organizations, usually with some rivalry between them. Be they sorority sisters, cheerleaders, coworkers, or members of a sports team, in the context of this film genre, it's an unwritten rule that they're likely to become embroiled in the heinous acts of a serial killer whose identity is a mystery. When it comes to slasher films, sororities assume an outsized role with their sorority houses, recognizable symbols, initiations, and vows of secrecy.

Broadening the scope of this Tag, it will also include stories featuring groups of like girls or women (peers) who customarily live together under the same roof (orphanages, boarding schools, long-term care institutions, factory dorms, etc.).

Examples

  • Cinema/Television: "The Young, the Evil and the Savage" (Original title: "Nude... si Muore", Antonio Margheriti, 1968), "Picnic at Hanging Rock" (Peter Weir, 1975), "The House on Sorority Row" (Mark Rosman, 1982).
