Plot
Astronaut Mike Colby is rudely awakened from suspended animation by his robotic pilot and sent by the Federation to the remote desert planet Xarbia, tasked with resolving a delicate problem that’s arisen at a genetic engineering lab. When he and his faithful robot sidekick arrive, the intergalactic troubleshooter learns that the research team, while attempting to synthetize an extraordinary new food source, has created an experimental lifeform designated “Subject 20”. What they don’t tell him at first is that this rapidly mutating creature was derived from splicing human DNA.
Beyond possessing a disturbing aggressive streak, this “metamorphic mutant” turns out to be intelligent as well, even devising specific plans to “use” the human beings around it. Colby plans to put his personal motto (“If it moves and it’s not one of us, shoot it!“) into practice and resolve the problem right off the bat, but he finds himself surrounded by recalcitrant scientists who view the “metamorph” as an interesting research subject.
His plan of action frustrated, Mike instead consoles himself with the station’s lovely female staff.
Meanwhile, it doesn’t take long for the creature to mutate into a huge insect-like being with an insatiable appetite…

Critique
6Low-budget production helmed by a Roger Corman looking to cash in on the resounding success of Ridley Scott’s “Alien” (1979). In fact, after an opening sequence that seems to mimic “Star Wars” (1977), the film veers into the sci-fi horror realm with its claustrophobic setting and a murderous, at-large creature. One has to admit that Holzman’s film works like a charm as a crude exploitation film: gelatinous entrails bubble, blood flows, female nudity abounds – there’s even a gratuitous sex scene with a voyeur thrown in for good measure.
On the (pseudo)scientific front, there’s no lack of amusing dialogue that wantonly mixes up genetic and biologic concepts (they babble on about mutations, mitosis, cellular differentiation processes, etc.). Among cult-favorite scenes we would cite the “ad hoc” hepatic tumor excision and the two curvaceous women doctors paying a bathrobe-clad visit to the creature in an attempt to communicate with it (“Can we coexist?” one asks via computer screen. The monster responds by jabbing a tentacle right through her body).
The soundtrack is noteworthy, featuring first-timer Susan Justin who has fun delving into the realm of new wave/electronica.

Trivia
- We can’t ignore the perplexing existence of a remake: “Dead Space” (1991), financed again by Corman and directed by Fred Gallo.
- According to some, “Forbidden World” constitutes a sequel to “Galaxy of Terror” (1981), umpteenth Corman production.
